All communities,
urban, suburban and rural, have seen an increase in teen
violence over the past five years. 95% of large cities and
88% of small cities suffer from gang related violence. In a
recent survey, 16.6% of those students polled said they had
carried a gun to school within the last 30 days, and 29.3%
said they had been in a fight within the same time period.
Every school
day more than 150,000 students stay home because they "are
sick of violence and afraid of being stabbed, shot or
beaten." Every 92 minutes an American child is shot.
Increasingly, school violence is indiscriminate and random.
According to the FBI over the last 15 years: Here are some
trends in juvenile violent crime. Simple Assault up 98%,
Aggravated Assault up 64%, carrying a Weapon up 50%
Murder up 39%, Robbery up 37%.

Now at a time
when world leaders are preoccupied with global conflict and
economic turmoil, it is even more critical that Dance Nia
spread it’s anti violence message to youth and provide a
proactive alternative for youth.
Through Dance
Nia programs, children and young adults build leadership
skills; heal from past abuse and work together to counter
the destructiveness of violence.
